In 2017, China’s civil aviation industry maintained steady and rapid growth, as reflected by key transport indicators published in the Statistical Bulletin of Civil Aviation Industry Development 2017 released by Civil Aviation Administration of China on May 21.

Transportation turnover

In 2017, the civil aviation industry had a total traffic volume of 108.308 billion ton-kilometers, up by 12.6% from 2016. 

The total traffic volume for domestic routes reached 69.46 billion ton-kilometers, representing an increase of 11.7% compared to the previous year. Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan routes completed 1.61 billion ton-kilometers, an increase of 4.3%. On international routes, traffic volume grew by 14.3% year on year to 38.848 billion ton-kilometers.

Passenger turnover

In 2017, the passenger turnover of the industry totaled 951.304 billion passenger-kilometers, representing an increase of 13.5% from 2016. 

The passenger turnover of domestic routes jumped by 13.2% to 703.653 billion passenger-kilometers, of which 14.825 billion passenger-kilometers were completed on Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan routes, an increase of 2.9% year on year. The passenger turnover of international routes rose by 14.6% to 247.651 billion passenger-kilometers.

Passenger Traffic

The civil aviation industry transported a total of 551.56 million passengers in 2017, an increase of 13% from 2016. 

Some 496.11 million passengers were transported through domestic routes, up by 13.7%, of which 10.27 million were through Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan routes, an increase of 4.3%. International routes registered a passenger volume of 55.45 million, 7.4% more than the previous year.

In 2017, the civil transport airports in China registered 1.148 billion passengers, up by 12.9% from the previous year.

By the end of 2017, there were a total of 58 air transportation companies in China, one fewer than the previous year.
