Atlanta-Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) secured top spot again last year. With almost 104 million passengers, the airport is within a two-hour flight of 80% of the United States’ population. Beijing (PEK) held second spot with nearly 95.79 million passengers and Dubai (DXB) remained in third position with around 88.24 million passengers.

Guangzhou (CAN), with nearly 65.89 million passengers, grew by 10.3% and ranked 13rd, making it the second fastest growing airport among the top 20.

The focus of international civil aviation development is shifting to Asia. IATA expects China will displace the US as the world’s largest aviation market by 2022. ACI’s World Airport Traffic Forecasts predicts that India will represent the third largest aviation market by 2020 in terms of passenger throughput, after the US and China.

According to a report released by Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in March, China’s domestic airport capacity reached 1.147 billion in 2017, up 12.9% over the previous year. The number of airports with more than 10 million passenger throughput rose by 4 to 32.

According to CAPA, global airports will pour 1 trillion dollars in expanding and upgrading so as to accommodate the explosive growth in market demand, and half of the investment will go to Asia.
