Chongqing is actively pursuing a bid to become home to a Disney park in western China, as Chongqing Foreign Trade & Economic Relations Commission (CFTERC) revealed that the Walt Disney Company had put on its agenda a new theme park in western and central China even before work started on Shanghai Disney Resort. “We attach great importance to the proposed Disney Resort project in Western China and we are now actively discussing the plan to bid for the project,” the commission stated.

Currently, the Walt Disney Company has three Disney Resorts in the Asia-Pacific region, in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

CFTERC disclosed that it has been actively wooing well-known local and overseas theme park developers such as Overseas Chinese Town Holdings Company and Chimelong Group since 2013. So far, Chongqing has successfully introduced various landmark projects including Happy Valley and Han Hai Polar Ocean park, (“汉海极地海洋公园”) which are slated to open in 2017. (Translated by Claire)
