Passenger traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) continued to see strong growth in the first quarter of 2016.

According to the latest data from Hong Kong’s Airport Authority (AA), the airport handled 17.6 million passengers in the January-March 2016 period, up 7.5% year-on-year. Flight movements increased 4.0% to 102,880.

In March 2016 alone, the airport handled six million passengers and 35,060 flights, up 4.8% and 2.2% respectively compared to the same month last year. The continued growth at HKIA is primarily due to Hong Kong resident traffic, which jumped 19.0% in March. The AA also said that demand for flights to and from Southeast Asia and North Asia recorded the strongest growth.

The airport remains on course to achieve another record-breaking year in 2016. Having reached a new high of 68.5m passengers in 2015, HKIA has now opened its new Midfield Concourse, which will increase the airport’s total capacity by 10m passengers per year.
