URBN Hotel Shanghai made sustainability their manifesto when the 26-key boutique originally opened in 2008. There are few terms in the design world right now hotter than “eco-friendly.” From water conservation to recycled woods, caring for the planet has become an integral part of crafting the design narrative for almost any hospitality project. URBN Hotel Shanghai made sustainability their manifesto when the 26-key boutique originally opened in 2008. For the current redux, designer Jay Godfrey knew that his vision for a modern, chic vibe would have to center on maintaining that ethos. So, beyond the use of recycled and reclaimed woods and bricks, he also wanted to make sure that the focal points drew on the same theme. So, a display of antique suitcases (found in local street markets) forms the design statement for the lobby. When it came to the rooms, Godfrey took a more luxurious approach. Silks and velvets give off an opulent air, and lighting helps set the mood. For the Jay Godfrey Courtyard Suite, the designer melded the contemporary look of a Soho loft with a current Asian vibe. Black lacquer provides a meeting point between the two styles, while pendant lights add layers to the illumination. |
