A Perthshire hotel has been named Scotland’s most romantic.
The Knockendarroch House Hotel in Pitlochry is also the eighth most popular lovers’ hideaway in the whole of the UK. The hotel, where rooms cost up to £212 a night, boasts open fires, four poster beds and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It was the only Scottish venue to make the top 10, beating St Andrews’ Old Course Hotel and Edinburgh’s Balmoral in the process. It was even placed above London celebrity haunts the Mayfair and the Ritz. Knockendarroch also reached the 21st spot in a list of European venues. The accolade was awarded to the 12- room hotel by travel website TripAdvisor as part of its 2013 Travellers’ Choice Awards. The awards are based on millions of reviews and opinions from travellers around the world. Liz Martin, owner of Knockendarroch House, was “absolutely delighted” to receive the award. She said: “I was very much surprised when they called but very happy about it. “I think what people like here is the log fires — it’s a very romantic notion. Recently we’ve had a number of proposals and people come back for their anniversary and for their honeymoon. “To be named among the UK and the world’s most romantic hotels in this year’s Travellers’ Choice Awards is a fantastic reward. “We don’t court this kind of publicity but it’s the way TripAdvisor looks at their reviews to decide (the winners). “The ultimate accolade is to be recognised by our guests for our efforts in making their stay a romantic one. We are very grateful to guests who wrote reviews.” TripAdvisor spokeswoman Emma Shaw said: “To be home to both one of the UK’s most romantic hotels and one of the UK’s top hotels is a great achievement for Pitlochry’s tourism. “The stunning Perthshire scenery and clear mountain air have obviously contributed to making Pitlochry a much- loved destination for travellers and, in particular, couples looking for a spot of romance.” |
