Starwood Capital Group has opened its first property under the 1 Hotels eco-luxury brand in Miami Beach and it plans to open additional 1 Hotel properties.

The hotel will use a Tesla Model S electric sedan for shuttle service

1 Hotel & Homes South Beach has 426 guestrooms, 600 feet of beachfront and a food-and-beverage operation headed by chef Tom Colicchio. The hotel has a 112-foot-long rooftop pool and plans to add an 18,000-square-foot spa by the end of the year. Rates start at about $700 a night.

1 Hotels will emphasize an eco-friendly approach in its design that will feature many amenities made with renewable and reclaimed products. The hotels will feature reclaimed wood for guest room headboards, hemp-blend mattresses, eco-friendly dry cleaning and low-flow plumbing fixtures as well as LED lighting fixtures and motion sensors to reduce electricity use. The pool deck at the Miami Beach hotel uses wood from the property’s original boardwalk.

Shuttle service will be provided with Tesla Model S electric luxury sedans.

The 1 Hotel opening is the second debut within the past week of brands Sternlicht announced before the 2007-08 financial crisis but had to delay as both travel spending and hotel financing dried up. The first Baccarat Hotel & Residences, named after the iconic French crystal maker that Starwood Capital acquired in 2005,opened in New York last week with 114 hotel guestrooms and 60 luxury residences.

Sternlicht, who departed as CEO of Starwood Hotels & Resorts in 2005 to branch out on his own, announced the 1 Hotel brand in 2006 and the Baccarat Hotels & Resorts brand a year later.

Sternlicht, who created Starwood’s W brand in 1998, planned for the first 1 Hotel property to open in Seattle in 2008, with additional properties slated for New York and Washington, D.C., in 2010. The first Baccarat was originally slated to open in Maui, in 2010.

Starwood Capital plans to open additional 1 Hotel properties in Manhattan and in Brooklyn by the end of the year.
